The How to Be a Humanist series provides a forum for humanists practicing both within and outside the university to reflect on their craft. It encourages dialogue across disciplines and fosters the spirit of humanistic inquiry. At the same time, it recognizes the structural and institutional barriers that can hinder productive work in these fields, such as decreased funding and opportunities.
Blending theoretical questions with practical guidance, the series features diverse voices reflecting on the practice of the humanities today. It asks what the humanities are, why they matter, and where and how they take place within a rapidly changing scholarly ecosystem. The series makes visible the intellectual purposes that continue to animate humanistic inquiry in the twenty-first century.
